Gentrification (renovate and improve especially a house or district so that it conforms to middle-class taste) is a phenomenon that we are facing globally. This phenomenon has been seriously occurring not only in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Berlin, Barcelona and many more cities including New York, the place which this post is talking about. This morning I received an email from Shiro, a friend of mine who is a Japanese female graffiti artist has been supporting people and culture that she loves:
“I am in NY now. I have been a volunteer to “Save 5Points” since I came to NY. As you know, 5Pointz have been existing as graffiti mecca for 11 years in Long Island City NYC. But it’s facing a crisis and could be demolished because of the politics & becoming superannuated..We are trying to make 5Pointz a cultural landmark, then museum of graffiti / street art and youth culture center.”
“This case has been discussed in NYC court. I also went to the public hearing, then did a speech in the court last week, There were people who are very much street (5PTZ side) were in the court, listening to those speech and judge talking about this case. That was really like a Hip Hop Movie! lolol
We need your help to spread this word to more people on your blog etc..There is a politic issue which they can’t write it on their website and make it official. You can see more details of this case from
Please download the form which is attached, them fill in it, scan it, and send it to firstname.lastname@example.org. If 5Pointz is knocked down, it will be huge loss for art, culture and history. Please support us to save 5Pointz. Thank you, Love you, Xxxx!”
5Pointz Aerosol Art Center, Inc. is an outdoor art exhibit space in Long Island City, New York, considered to be the world’s premiere “graffiti Mecca”. For the past 10 years 5 Pointz has been not only the worlds largest outdoor garffiti mecca but it has been where the meeting of the elements of hip hop can come together and showcase for the community. So, if you want to help save this “graffiti Mecca”, please drag the form (larger image) down to your computer desk top and fill in it and send.
Graffiti or hip hop is a global culture that forms a bond between us no matter how far we are from each other. It doesn’t matter where you come from, help keep it and spread it, let’s show some love to 5Pointz. Thanks Shiro for sharing and fighting together with her friends and everyone who loves hip hop culture in NYC.
