Many of us know BOTY, The “Battle of the Year” is the biggest international
breakdance competition worldwide. It took place for the first time in 1990 in
Hannover, Germany. And it became a steady annual institution with national
and continental qualifiers.
Now things are getting heated in the Middle East. This year a qualifier for the
Middle East region will be organized for the first time in Dubai. It was taking place
some days ago at the Dubai Mall or Star Atrium in Dubai and the qualifier goes to
Desert Storm if the info is displayed correctly from the BOTY Middle East site.

One of the Asian finalists I want to introduce you next is Nine States B-Boyz
from Japan. The Nine States B-Boyz literally came out from nowhere to shake up
the Japanese b-boys scene, even beating well-known crew Mortal Combat
at the Battle Of The Year Japan. They are a young and enterprising crew
from the south side of Japan, an area called “Kyusyu” which means
“the region of the nine states“.

Then, no doubt, Jinjo crew, the winners of the Battle Of The Year 2010.
This Korea crew formed in 2001 and members include world famous champions
b-boy Hong10 and b-boy Wing, winners of the Red Bull BC1 in 2006 in Brazil
and 2008 in Paris respectively.

After a four year absence, Thai b-boying kicked Malaysia, SIngapore

Couple weeks ago I arrived in Germany and because of an EU x CN artist
exchange program I’ll be here for a while. I have to apologize that
sometimes there could be contents about my Europe trip as I’d like
to share what I have found cool here. Hope this is fine to most of you.
But don’t worry, I’ll keep the Asian contents regularly!
At the beginning of this year, I went to the BRIGHT Tradeshow
in Berlin. What impressive me most was not those decorative showroom
or creative catalogue by international street wear brands, instead, it was
a film screening about a project called Skateistan.
Skateistan is Afghanistan’s—and the world’s—first co-educational skateboarding school.
Operating as an independent, neutral, Afghan NGO, the school engages
growing numbers of urban and internally-displaced youth in Afghanistan through
skateboarding, and provides them with new opportunities in cross-cultural
interaction, education, and personal empowerment.
I was really amazed by the project. It is such an awesome idea and I am very proud
of the organizers although I have never met them. After more than half a year,
I met Joel, who is involved with Skateistan since quite a while and he just
wrote his diploma about street cultures as a tool for development cooperation.
And now, I can’t believe that I have the chance to give a hand on their coming
exhibition preparation all out a sudden! The exhibitions will start on this noon. If you
are in Berlin, just come over and help spread around this meaningful project!

“Taipei, Taiwan was steaming tonight—not only with sweltering heat, but with
the incredible energy of 1200 people who had come to the sold out Cinema Park
venue where 16 B-Boys from Asia, Australia and Newzealand battled for a spot
in the finals of the Red Bull BC One. Host Mario Bee from the Netherlands knew
how to fire up the audience with the support of hot beats from DJ Tee from Osaka.”

The Wall Lords Korea ended last weekend. Korea always has a good vibe.
We joined the Wall Lords and then head over to the R-16 b-boy championship.
Big up to Johnjay and Charlie holding it down in Korea.
And peace to all the homies that took care of us in Seoul !

Every year, the best B-boys around the globe will gather in Korea to
fight for their Bboy title. It’s gonna be another tight match this year.
The two-days event will be held at the Olympic park like last year.
Check out the flyer for detail.

Just came back from Seoul, Korea last night, had a really good and relaxing time
there. Due to several people have told me there are nothing much to do / see in Korea,
I went down without expectation. But this trip really surprised me and proved that
those people give me a wrong idea.
The following ice / cold noodle is something that I have never tried before.
Under this damn hot weather, unlike the humidity of HK, having a bowl of
cold noodle in Korea with real ice inside does refresh us a lot!

I thought Hong Kong has pretty smart system in many things, however,
after going Seoul, I feel that we are a bit far from the real smart technology!
The Smart Parking did show me how convenient it could be to park a car and how
to park a car in a limited space. I saw it only on TV, but live, it’s the first time.
I believe this system also exists in other countries like Japan and Russia.
If you want to know how it works, you may check here.
You can also find this public phone booth with web camera plus google
map on street. I’m sure there are lots of people want this in Hong Kong.

Apart from the smart technology, you can easily find very interesting
decoration over buildings, shops, restaurants and bars everywhere. It gives
me the feeling as if I was in Japan.

Instead of going to those “must visit hot spots” like Seoul Tower or
Dongdaemoon (Great East Gate), my homie girl Numi brought me to
several really chill places. Honestly, after the visit of Forbidden City in Beijing
last month, I am kinda no longer interested in any palace from other places.
It was just like “OMG, how could they make it and how much time they
did need to build something like that!” Well anyway, we went to the below
location and it was a bit weird for me to see the following scene actually.

People put their legs or feet into an artificial river or its water comes
from a little fountain in the middle of the city, it looks quite strange to me.
But, people enjoyed very much there and you can feel the very peaceful
and joyful atmosphere. The water is quite frozen, and again, you would want
to jump into it under this hot weather! So, bring your snacks and drinks to sit
there is a good option too. It’s nearly to the Gyeongbokgung Palace.
Last but not the least, this park is famous! You should definitely check it
if you love street culture. People play different music there, they just simply ignore
everyone and enjoy themselves there! Ha! It is a very good meeting place for
B-boys, rappers, music lovers, and of course, you see many tags and bombing around.

Weekend is especially crowded and you can see that it is likely people
hold their own party at the park and move the clubs to outside.
Will post more about this trip next, if you want to see some graff
and tattoo shop in Korea, keep an eye on us : )

Introducing by Martha Cooper, Hanifa McQueen-Hudson is the first B-girl
in United Kingdom. Born and raised of Jamaican parents, Hanifa’s
African Caribbean culture and heritage strongly influenced her skills
and knowledge in black music and dance from a very young age. From the
age of 5, she was taught how to play various drums and percussions
from West Africa and was later introduced to the B Boy scene in the early ’80s.
